Preparing for Your Surgery: Your Complete Guide

Everything You Need for Peace of Mind

 

PRE-OP INTRUCTIONS


FASTING INSTRUCTIONS (All Procedures)


A.ADULTS 

  1. NO SOLID FOOD for 8 hours before surgery
  2. Water 4 hours before surgery
  3. Exception: Small sips of water only if taking essential medications approved by your surgeon
  4. Rinse your mouth without swollowing when you brush your teeth
  5. Shower or bathe.especially the umbilical area 


B. CHILDREN

  1. NO SOLID FOOD for 8 hours before surgery
  2. Non-mother milk, formula milk, or alternative milk for 6 hours before surgery
  3. Mother milk's for 4 hours before surgery
  4. Water allowed 2 hours before surgery


 

All patients must provide during admission:

  • Working local UAE mobile number
  • Alternative contact number (family member or colleague)
  • Valid email address
  • Ensure all numbers are working and accessible 



Getting Ready for Surgery: What You Need to Know

PRE-OP INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE SURGERY

GENERAL PRE-OPERATIVE GUIDELINES (All Procedures)2-3 Weeks Before Surgery

Medications to STOP:

Aspirin and aspirin-containing medications

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs): ibuprofen, naproxen, Advil, Motrin

Blood thinners (Aspirin unless specifically instructed by your cardiologist)

Vitamin E supplementsFish oil and omega-3 supplementsHerbal supplements: ginkgo biloba, ginseng, garlic supplements, St. John's wortMedications 


Generally SAFE to Continue:

Acetaminophen (Tylenol) for pain relief,Prescription medications as directed by your physician

Birth control pills (unless otherwise instructed)


1-2 Weeks Before SurgeryLifestyle Modifications:

  1. STOP SMOKING completely (nicotine significantly impairs healing)
  2. Stop alcohol consumptionMaintain a healthy diet rich in protein and vitaminsStay well-hydratedGet adequate sleep (7-8 hours nightly)
  3. Medical Preparations:Complete all pre-operative lab work and medical clearances (Pre-anaesthesia check-up)
  4. Arrange for post-operative care and transportation
  5. Fill all prescribed medications
  6. Purchase recommended supplies (gauze, ice packs, etc.)24-48 Hours
  7. Before SurgeryFinal Preparations:Wash hair the night before (you may not be able to wash it for several days post-op)
  8. Remove all nail polish and makeupDo not apply lotions, creams, or deodorants on the day of surgery
  9. Arrange childcare and pet carePrepare your recovery area at home


FACIAL SURGERY SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS

Pre-Operative Care/Skin Preparation:

  1. Use gentle, fragrance-free cleansers for 1 week prior
  2. Avoid facial treatments, chemical peels, or microdermabrasion for 2 weeks
  3. Stop retinoids and glycolic acid products 1 week before surgery
  4. Protect skin from sun exposure
  5. Special Considerations:Arrange for someone to drive you home and stay with you for 24-48 hours
  6. Stock soft foods and liquids for post-operative nutrition
  7. Obtain extra pillows to keep head elevated during recovery,Remove contact lenses before surgery (bring glasses)
  8. Day of Surgery:Arrive with a completely clean face (no makeup, moisturizer, or skincare products)
  9. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that doesn't pull over your head
  10. Bring a button-up shirt or zip-up hoodieWear comfortable, flat shoes


HAND SURGERY SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Keep fingernails short and clean
  2. Remove all jewelry from hands and wrists
  3. Remove nail polish completely
  4. Practice daily activities with your non-dominant hand
  5. Special Arrangements:Arrange help with daily activities (cooking, dressing, personal care)Prepare your home for one-handed living
  6. Stock easy-to-open food containers
  7. Set up a comfortable area for hand elevation
  8. Day of Surgery:Wear loose-fitting clothes that are easy to put on with one hand
  9. Bring a large, loose shirt or jacket to accommodate post-surgical dressing
  10. Arrange for assistance with transportation and post-operative care


DIABETES 

If You Have Diabetes Follow specific instructions provided by your Physician / Surgeon regarding insulin and blood sugar management. Monitor blood glucose levels closely. Bring your glucose meter and supplies


WHAT TO BRING ON SURGERY DAY

  1. Required Items:
  2. Emirates ID
  3. Insurance cards
  4. List of current medications and dosages
  5. Emergency contact information
  6. Comfortable, loose-fitting clothes
  7. Payment for any required co-pays or deductibles
  8. Bring family member or a friend as a bystander when you are admitted.
  9. You must have a family member or a friend to drive you home after surgery.
  10. Recommended Items: Cell phone and charger ,Reading material or entertainment for waiting
  11. Lip balm (unscented)
  12. Glasses (if you wear contacts)


WHAT HOSPITAL WILL PROVIDE

  1. Patient dress
  2. Towel
  3. Soap
  4. Meals
  5. Charging points
  6. Free Wi-Fi Soap


ITEMS TO LEAVE AT HOME

Jewelry, including wedding rings,Valuable items,Makeup and skincare products,Contact lenses,Dentures (unless instructed otherwise)


WHERE TO COME      For admission kindly come to Reception desk, Ground floor, B Block, New building


WHEN TO COME      

3 hours before the surgery


Contact Your Surgeon's Clinic 

  1. If:You develop a cold, fever, or flu symptoms
  2. You have questions about medications
  3. You need to reschedule due to illness
  4. You have concerns about the procedure


Post-Operative Preparation,

  1. Ensure you have:
  2. Prescribed medications ready,
  3. Ice packs or frozen peas for swelling
  4. Gauze and medical supplies as recommended
  5. Comfortable recovery area set up at home
  6. Arranged time off work and assistance with daily activities.
  7. Don't forget to take sick leave before leaving the hospital, if needed
